MLB Picks

The Sports Picks Buffet is famous for MLB picks and has had huge profits so far in the 2010 MLB season.

When I get this website fully finished I will update this page with my own personal MLB picks... for now check out the article I had written about MLB money line betting below.

MLB Money Line Betting

Online betting on football far outweighs the amount wagered on MLB games each year. This is partly because of the NFL’s popularity compared to Major League Baseball, but the fact that you can bet against the spread in the NFL as well as on a moneyline also has something to do with it.

Baseball can be a funny sport. The best team wins 60-70% of the time instead of 90-100% of the time. Games that should not be close on paper end up coming down to the wire all of the time. The percentage of close games and the unpredictability of baseball means that betting against the spread is not feasible for online sports books or sports bettors.

Example of an MLB money line bet

Let’s say the Atlanta Braves are playing the New York Yankee’s in game 7 of the world series. The game is in Atlanta [thanks to Brian McCann winning the All Star game for the National league] and Atlanta’s best pitcher, Tim Hudson is on the mound, so Atlanta is the slight favorite. The money line bet is:

Atlanta -140
New York +130

What does this mean exactly?

The team with the negative sign is always the favorite, while the team with the plus sign is always the underdog.

The -140 line on Atlanta means that you would have to bet 140 dollars on Atlanta to win 100 dollars. In other terms, a 140 dollar bet on Atlanta would result in 240 dollars overall in your account after the bet if Atlanta, the favorite, did end up winning the game.

The +130 line next to New York means that a 100 dollar bet on the Yankee’s would result in 130 dollars in winnings if the Yankees win the game. Which means you would have 230 dollars overall after placing a 100 dollar bet if the Yankees ended up winning the theoretical game.

The difference in the two numbers [-140 vs. +130] is where the Sports book makes their money. If the numbers were the same [-140 vs. +140 or -130 vs. +130] the Sports book would have to be lucky to break even on any games and would be out of business fairly quickly.

The higher the two numbers get, the better chance the favorite has of winning the game, at least in the Sports Books eyes.

Money Line bets are available in football, basketball, soccer, and even tennis betting. Remember, when you make a money line bet the margin of victory does not matter, all that matters is who wins and loses.
